Well my ole 99 clunker needs the fork oil changed. It does not have air on the front so is it a big deal, new seals, what oil works best on the glides??

I have a '09 and changed the stock fork oil out for the Screaming Eagle oil and the bike handles much better now. It's a lot stiffer and no more front end dive.

We did not have to take off the fairing but taking the plastics off from around the speedo and ignition was annoying and that was the hardest part.

Did it have air from the factory on the 99' RG? My 99' Ultra had air on the front, thats interested if it was only on the batwings that year. I know HD only did the air on the front for a few years, not sure when they started it.

When it came time to change the fork oil,.. my mechanic buddy asked me "Have you ever heard of a bike going bad or breaking down because they didn't change the fork oil?" I said no,.. so we never replaced it :D

I owned a 99 and it had the air in the forks. You need to fid out what forks are in the bike as newer style forks reqire differant amounts of oil. If the previous owner just removed the air lines and cap the forks then the oil amount will remane the same, altought I would recomend a heavy oil. Doc

When I changed mine, I replaced it with W15, and I installed 13 oz instead of the called for 10.

No more dive.... no more give either! Slowly drained little amounts out of the lower drain plugs until I had the ride the way I wanted it.

I captured (tried to capture) the oil I was draining out. So there is now 11.5 oz of oil in each side.

For those of you who haven't done this, it's really worth the time. No more fork dive, no more mush. No more stuffing a corner and having the front end push right though it....

The first time you do it, it's a bit of a pain, but it really isn't hard.

I change my fork oil now every spring.

Amsoil Heavy in the Glide. (W15 full syn) and Amsoil Tranny fluid in the RK. (air assist forks)

I'm thinking that this winter I'm gonna install Progressives new front cartridge system. NICE.

Well after 3 phone calls I got the rest of the story on my bike today.. 5years ago it was taken to the local HD store because the owner wanted Chrome forks... Well he got a complete new chrome front end, $875.00 installed did away with the air ride, he told me he had it in the box if I wanted it. New forks were same size as the originals just without the air. There is a small allen head plug on the bottom of the forks just above the axel nut.

You may have a 2002 to 2005 cartridge fork set up, cartridge is in the left fork. When you drain the forks you will have to measure what comes out of each side, if you have less oil in the left fork , you have the cartridge fork and will have to be filled as a 02 to 05 fork. pita. If you get the same amount of fork oil left and right you may have a 01 front fork set up or also a 06 up fork could have been used. Good luck. Maybe the owner may have the part number used on the new forks that would help . Doc
